Startup India (DPIIT) Recognition: Benefits and How to Apply

Bright, modern startup office with collaborative workspaces

The Startup India initiative gives formal recognition to young, innovative businesses through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). Recognition is free, online and often worth the effort, but only if you understand what it does and doesn't give you.

Who is eligible?

Broadly, a business can apply if it is:

  • Incorporated as a private limited company, a registered partnership firm or an LLP
  • Within the age and turnover limits set by DPIIT
  • Working towards innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or a scalable business model with high potential for employment or wealth creation
  • Not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business

Proprietorships and unregistered partnerships are not eligible, which is one more reason to choose your structure carefully at the start.

What are the benefits?

  • Self-certification under certain labour and environmental laws, reducing inspections
  • Faster, cheaper intellectual property protection, including fee rebates and expedited patent examination
  • Access to government schemes and funds, including the Fund of Funds and seed-fund programmes, and easier participation in public procurement
  • Possible income-tax holiday for a limited period, subject to a separate approval process and conditions
  • Simpler exit through faster winding-up processes
  • Credibility with investors, incubators and state startup missions such as Kerala Startup Mission

How to apply

  1. Incorporate your company or LLP (or register your partnership).
  2. Create an account on the Startup India portal.
  3. Prepare your application: entity details, founders, a description of your innovation and how it is scalable, plus supporting documents such as a pitch deck, website or patents.
  4. Submit and respond to any queries from DPIIT.
  5. Receive your recognition certificate, then apply separately for tax benefits if you wish to claim them.

Common reasons for rejection

  • Vague descriptions that don't explain what is innovative
  • Ineligible entity type
  • Business that is a simple trading or service activity with no innovation element
  • Incomplete or inconsistent documents
